Jesus gave the 12 power over demons (Matthew 10:1), but later said, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8) If they had already been given power, why did they need to receive power again? Because they had lost the power they had been given. Their power was by virtue of their relationship to Christ in His bodily presence on earth. When He left, everything changed. He was saying power would be restored to their lives as they entered into a vital relationship with the Holy Spirit. It was the same power—and ever greater—based not on His physical proximity but on an indwelling relationship with the Holy Spirit. -Bob Sorge

Religious constructs built around abstinence from permissible things creates an illusion of transformation propped up by fear, not love. We abstain from permissible things to reach for what is beneficial because we have been awakened to love and long to abide in Christ. Abiding in Christ is the only means to honestly confront the issues of the heart that continually cause us to come short in our calling. -David Sliker

The story of the Incarnation is the story of a descent and resurrection... one has the picture of a diver, stripping off garment after garment, making himself naked, then flashing for moment in the air, and then down through the green, and warm and sunlit water into the pitch black, cold, freezing water, down into the mud and slime, then up again, his lungs almost bursting, back again into the green and sunlit water, and then at last out into the sunshine, holding in his hand the dripping thing he went down to get. This thing is human nature. -CS Lewis

The calloused heart is a fierce and capable foe that must be beaten back daily with the weapon of wondrous, Spirit-filled joy. We must fight for the kind of tenderness of heart that refuses to let the awesome become overfamiliar, and the beautiful become plain. When love grows cold, it doesn't happen all at once. It's the culmination of thousands of small choices to believe the worst about people. -David Sliker

It seems that John didn’t earn himself any friends with the priests, when he said his baptism was “for the remission of sins” (Mark 1:4). He claimed his baptism of repentance had powers of remission like unto the temple sacrifices. It was the launch of the Gospel era. -Bob Sorge
