Today I am longing for something authentic, aching for Jesus, wanting Him and Him alone, undone by the piercing depths of His life and love. My heart can barely stand the thought of another “unique teaching” or “keen insight” from one more “anointed” vessel. Taste for the eternal fades as we exchange the burning gaze of seraphim for the unyielding boredom of Dr. Phils dressed in preachers’ garb. O God, save us from the insightful sages of our day and give us that which has always mystified the saints and terrorized devils. -Allen Hood

The great missionary heroes of previous generations were unimpressive men and women who humbly gave the nations an impressive God. Modern media has seduced a generation into a vain imagination: that natural charisma is anointing and that gifting is the key to success. The challenge of modern church leadership: training a generation to walk in the power of the Holy Spirit without drawing attention to self. -David Sliker

Jesus gave the 12 power over demons (Matthew 10:1), but later said, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8) If they had already been given power, why did they need to receive power again? Because they had lost the power they had been given. Their power was by virtue of their relationship to Christ in His bodily presence on earth. When He left, everything changed. He was saying power would be restored to their lives as they entered into a vital relationship with the Holy Spirit. It was the same power—and ever greater—based not on His physical proximity but on an indwelling relationship with the Holy Spirit. -Bob Sorge

We abstain from permissible things to reach for what is beneficial because we have been awakened to love and long to abide in Christ. Abiding in Christ is the only means to honestly confront the issues of the heart that continually cause us to come short in our calling. -David Sliker
