Three divine mandates from Jesus: "Love Me, love your neighbors, love yourselves." "Love" is an active word, not just a passive one. We understand loving Jesus and our neighbors in the active sense, but default to the passive sense of the word when it comes to ourselves. Actively loving yourself is not really about "right self-esteem" or even "right identity" - it's about putting yourself in the way of God. In Romans 6, Paul explains how to actively love yourself: knowing what is true, not allowing sin to rule, and presenting ourselves to God. -David Sliker
