Jesus gave the 12 power over demons (Matthew 10:1), but later said, "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8) If they had already been given power, why did they need to receive power again? Because they had lost the power they had been given. Their power was by virtue of their relationship to Christ in His bodily presence on earth. When He left, everything changed. He was saying power would be restored to their lives as they entered into a vital relationship with the Holy Spirit. The story of the Incarnation is the story of a descent and resurrection... one has the picture of a diver, stripping off garment after garment, making himself naked, then flashing for moment in the air, and then down through the green, and warm and sunlit water into the pitch black, cold, freezing water, down into the mud and slime, then up again, his lungs almost bursting, back again into the green and sunlit water, and then at last out into the sunshine, holding in his hand the dripping thing he went down to get. The calloused heart is a fierce and capable foe that must be beaten back daily with the weapon of wondrous, Spirit-filled joy. We must fight for the kind of tenderness of heart that refuses to let the awesome become overfamiliar, and the beautiful become plain. When love grows cold, it doesn't happen all at once. It's the culmination of thousands of small choices to believe the worst about people. -David Sliker

It seems that John didn’t earn himself any friends with the priests, when he said his baptism was “for the remission of sins” (Mark 1:4). He claimed his baptism of repentance had powers of remission like unto the temple sacrifices. It was the launch of the Gospel era. -Bob Sorge

For the world, there is no message more offensive than the crucified and resurrected God-Man who has now been appointed as the Earth's Judge.

For the church, there is no message more offensive than the call to pursue the fullness of God in full partnership with the Bridegroom.

Stephen and John the Baptist could have preserved their lives by keeping their mouths shut when in the presence of adversaries. When hearing any sermon, our first priority is to look for a biblical connection to Jesus, then forge a clear action plan of application. How a sermon makes you "feel" in the moment is irrelevant, and actually unhelpful, if we take Paul's charge to "test all things" seriously. If our primary means of discernment is how sermons make us feel, we're in grave danger of being held captive to the seduction of sentiment. Have we built our understanding of Jesus around how He makes us feel or around who He really is? -David Sliker
