Paul thus summarized communion and the kerygma of the church: “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes” (1 Cor. 11:26). This dual emphasis on the death and the return of Messiah is seen throughout Paul’s writings, and it seems that the crucifixion and Parousia of Christ together constituted the essential “center” of Paul’s gospel. - John P.
