Therefore, the ideal reader of Matthew’s Gospel (i.e., the one familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures) would have been prepared by the time he reached 24:34 to expect η γενεά αυτη ("this generation") to be a reference to the people of Israel viewed collectively (i.e., in corporate solidarity) as unfaithful to their God.
